Robin Thicke, Pharrell ordered to pay Marvin Gaye's family $7.4m for Blurred Lines

Robin Thicke, Pharrell ordered to pay Marvin Gaye's family $7.4m for Blurred Lines

Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke made $16.5million from their 2013 smash hit single, Blurred Lines, but a court has ordered them to give $7.4 million of that money to Marvin Gaye's family

The court determined  yesterday March 10th that the singers copied elements of Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give it Up" for Blurred Lines, which was written and produced by Pharrell.

The court decided that Gaye's family should receive $4million in damages and $3.4 million in profits from the song, with Thicke forced to pay $1.7million from his own pocket and Pharrell $1.6million. T.I only rapped in the song so he wasn't involved in the lawsuit...

Pharrell and Robin Thicke in court yesterday. The singers attorney said the court's decision in favor of Gaye's family could affect musicians who try to emulate an era or another artist's sound.

Pharrell and Robin Thicke released a statement saying
"While we respect the judicial process, we are extremely disappointed in the ruling made today, which sets a horrible precedent for music and creativity going forward.
'Blurred Lines’ was created from the heart and minds of Pharrell, Robin and T.I. and not taken from anyone or anywhere else. We are reviewing the decision, considering our options and you will hear more from us soon about this matter.'
Pharrell and Thicke had filed a pre-emptive lawsuit against Marvin Gaye's estate back in August 2013 to prevent the estate from suing them for copyright infringement. They lost.

Today's Poem

The Mothers
From a poetic sequence, called 'Manhood'

We loved them.
We got up early
to toast their bagels.
Wrapped them in foil.
We filled their water bottles
and canteens. We washed
and bleached their uniforms,
the mud and dirt
and blood washed clean
of brutality. We marveled
at their bodies,
thighs thick as the trunk
of a spindle pine,
shoulders broad and able,
the way their arms filled out.
The milk they drank.
At the plate we could make out
their particular stance, though each
wore the same uniform as if they were
cadets training for war.
If by chance one looked up at us
and gave us a rise with his chin,
or lifted a hand, we beamed.
We had grown used to their grunts,
mumbles, and refusal to form a full sentence.
We made their beds and rifled through their pockets
and smelled their shirts to see if they were clean.
How else would we know them?
We tried to not ask too many questions
and not to overpraise.
Sometimes they were ashamed of us;
if we laughed too loud,
if one of us talked too long to their friend,
of our faces that had grown coarser.
Can't you put on lipstick?
We let them roll their eyes,
curse, and grumble at us
after a game if they'd missed a play
or lost. We knew to keep quiet;
the car silent the entire ride home.
What they were to us was inexplicable.
Late at night, after they were home in their beds,
we sat by the window and wondered
when they would leave us
and who they would become
when they left the cocoon of our instruction.
What kind of girl they liked.
We sat in a group and drank our coffee
and prayed that they'd get a hit.
If they fumbled a ball or struck out
we felt sour in the pit of our stomach.
We paced. We couldn't sit still or talk.
Throughout summer we watched
the trees behind the field grow fuller
and more vibrant and each fall
slowly lose their foliage—
it was as if we wanted to hold on
to every and each leaf.

Protesting youths clash with police in Ghana

Hundreds of youths clashed with police in the southern Ghanaian city of Tema, some 38 kilometers east of the capital Accra, during a demonstration against unstable power supply in the area.
Tema police spokesperson Juliana Obeng told journalists Tuesday the demonstrators violated the route agreed with the police and threw stones and bottles at the policemen who tried to control them.
The police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowd, injuring scores of protesters.
The demonstrators had threatened to attack the Sunon-Asogli Power Plant in 48 hours if they saw no improvement in the unstable power supply.
The leader of the demonstration, Samuel Owusu Mensah, said the residents had been enduring darkness.
The protesters also claimed there was a high unemployment rate in the area despite being surrounded by a number of industries, and accused members of the traditional council of illegally selling lands in the region.

My over 70yrs old mum wears diapers - Fayose to PDP Governors Forum

Statement from Kayode Ogundamisi - Diaspora for Buhari - Osinbanjo
Today Ayo Fayose took his madness a bit further by using his mother as an example of why Nigerians should not vote for an elderly person as candidate. Fayose's claim that his mother wears pampers is a new low just to make a political point.
In 1983 Chief Obafemi Awolowo contested for Presidency at age 74 and Nnamdi Azikwe at age 79 Can  bigot Ayo Fayose tell us if they both wore dipers? Fayose's fear of Buhari is more to do with Fayose facing justice for corruption than Buhari's age.

OMG! School kids die on their way back from excursion. (Graphic photos)

Some school children going on an excursion to the mount Afadjato in Ghana lost their lives in an extremely horrible accident today March 10th. According to an eye-witness, the vehicle the children were in was almost finishing the mountainous portion when the driver lost control and fell into the ditch killing pupils between the ages of 7-15 years.

They were from Kasoa going towards Afadjato on an excursion. They sent me a number of photos from the accident but it's so graphic I can use three. In other photos I can't share, some of the children are missing their heads. Too sad and too horrible. Our hearts go out to all the parents who lost their kids. See the pics after the cut but please be warned it's quite graphic

GEJ fired SURE-P boss for attending Obasanjo’s birthday event?

That's the trending discussion right now on social media. Presidential spokesperson Reuben Abati a few hours ago announced the sack of SURE-P boss, Martin Luther Agwai, and now there are reports that he was sacked for attending former president Obasanjo’s birthday event last week.

Premium Times reports
Premium Times understands reliably that Mr. Agwai was fired for flouting a presidential instruction that no government official or member of the ruling PDP, should attend the birthday event of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, last week.
Sources within the presidency told Premium Times that all government functionaries were instructed by President Jonathan to boycott Mr. Obasanjo’s birthday event.
Our sources said when informed of the president’s warning, Mr. Agwai, who climbed to the pinnacle of his career under the Obasanjo administration, said he will go ahead and attend the function, more so, in view of the president’s directive. Our sources said for daring the president, it was clear Mr. Agwai would be fired.
One source said it appears Mr. Agwai was informed ahead of the announcement of his removal Tuesday, as the former defence chief arrived early at the SURE-P office to pack his belongings.
Mr. Agwai himself replaced Christopher Kolade, who left office after criticising the president

Today's Poem

A Little Ode to Television
After the disorder of my days, and in the defeat of my evenings,
I love the quiet, revocable suicide of television,
especially British detective shows, where everyone
is driving cooperatively on the left, but the devoted detective
has broken many rules, and her superior officer
is inevitably impeding the plodding investigation,
while everyone speaks according to region and social class
and the rain tumbles down from the heavy
upholstery of the British sky.

I'm comforted knowing that the improbable murderer
will end up behind bars, or will die being captured, while the detective,
quietly vindicated, will return to her paperwork and her loneliness,
not unlike mine, isolated inside the rain-drenched black umbrella
of her nights. And I feel safe knowing a hundred more episodes are waiting
each as fateful as the sunset, and shaped by the same conventions
of order and mayhem. And I must never forget
to sing the praises of the music too—the royal
French horns, and the screeching violins of terror
at the spilling of British blood—and how all of it leads
perfectly into sleep.

We challenge Buhari to a debate - By Reuben Abati

We challenge Buhari to a debate - By Reuben Abati

Article written by president Jonathan's spokesman, Reuben Abati. Read below...
The last time Nigerians enjoyed something really close to an exciting Presidential debate was during the 1993 Presidential elections. I recall the colourful and memorable encounter between the late Chief MKO Abiola of the Social Democratic Party and Alhaji Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention.  At the end of that debate, it was clear who among the duo was better experienced, much more intellectually capable and more endearing to the electorate in terms of readiness for the job being applied for. That is what a debate, under these circumstances, is: it is a job interview.

The entire country is the panel and whereas actual measurement of impact may be tentative, especially in a developing country where there are challenges of illiteracy and access to mass media, the performance of the candidates ordinarily reshapes the conversation and can significantly influence voters’ choice. Unfortunately, in the lead up to this year’s Presidential elections, it seems certain that voters will be denied this opportunity for comparison, assessment, interaction, not to talk of the excitement and drama.

The man to blame for this denial is General Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Getting him to debate the incumbent, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been an uphill task.  To say that the man is scared, practically running away from an opportunity to debate his ideas against the incumbent’s, is to be charitable.  He doesn’t want it. Every effort to get him to the podium has been rebuffed by him and his handlers.

President Jonathan received, ahead of the INEC rescheduling of the dates for the 2015 elections, two requests for a Presidential debate. The President enthusiastically accepted and looked forward to both debates. But General Buhari was not interested. There is no gainsaying the fact that President Jonathan and General Buhari are the main contenders in this election. Every Nigerian would love to see the two of them debate. That would be good for our democracy.

The first group that approached President Jonathan was represented by John Momoh of Channels TV; Emeka Izeze of The Guardian, and Nduka Obaigbena of ThisDay, Arise TV and the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria. They said they were in talks with the APC. They needed us to agree to a debate. We checked our campaign schedule, and since Sundays were left free for review meetings and further consultations, we suggested that a Sunday date would be most convenient for us. That was when the drama began. The would-be organisers soon informed us that General Buhari did not want a debate on a Sunday, because according to him “he does not work on Sundays.”

I thought that was rather odd. President Jonathan works every day. The job of a President is a round-the-clock, all-year-round engagement. If a Sundaydate would be inconvenient, may be a Mondaythen. Feedback from the Buhari camp: Monday was not okay either. Eventually, the contact persons reported that a Tuesday date had been agreed upon. This coincided with a day when we were supposed to have rallies in two states of the North. Nonetheless, President Jonathan directed that he will keep the date, and that rallies for the day should be fast-tracked. We adjusted our schedule and intensified preparations for the Jonathan encounter with Buhari.

Two days to this debate that would have been, I received non-stop frantic calls from the troika of Momoh, Izeze and Obaigbena. There had been a development, they said. The fresh development was that they had met that same evening with General Buhari and he did not agree anymore to a debate with President Jonathan. Rather, he wanted a town hall meeting, in which he would be the sole participant. Another town hall meeting could be organized the same day for President Jonathan and both could be aired back to back. That was his request and wish. Momoh and Co wanted the President to agree to this.

They’d rather have the two candidates say something on whatever platform than say nothing at all. The President’s response was that a town hall meeting is not the same as a debate. He wanted a face-to-face debate with General Buhari. He also told Messrs Momoh, Izeze and Obaigbena that if he wanted a town hall meeting, he could always ask his Presidential Campaign Organization to arrange it. And General Buhari was in a position to organize his own town hall meeting as well. Should there be a change of mind and an opportunity for a proper debate, he, Jonathan, would be available at the shortest notice. We haven’t heard from the trio since then.

One of Buhari’s spokesmen later announced that he was pulling out of that particular debate because the organisers had been “compromised” by government and the integrity of the debate platform they were offering was therefore doubtful! Questions: The same media houses that grant APC disproportionate amount of attention, and which they patronize to push their propaganda? And who are the media managers on the APC side questioning the integrity of their old-time comrades, and one-time fellow hunters just so they could be seen to be committed? I leave these posers to the well-known parties involved to sort out among themselves, as they surely will when all of this is over.

The second group that invited us to a debate was the Nigeria Elections Debate Group, anchored by veteran journalist Taiwo Alimi in conjunction with a few media houses.  The NEDG has been organizing election debates since 1999, and has been so successful that it has been invited to do the same thing in other West African countries. The Buhari camp again rejected this invitation on the grounds that the media houses involved were pro-government and therefore partisan.

But of course, the puerile protestations of Buhari’s handlers are meaningless. A debate is what it is: an intellectual duel requiring skills, knowledge, comportment and the ability to persuade the listener.  The medium may even be far less important than the message and the messenger.  I have no doubt that Buhari’s handlers have enough sound knowledge of this elementary truth, but they are insecure. Each time they are asked to produce their candidate for a debate, they invent a ridiculous reason.

Obviously, General Buhari seems to be afraid of engaging every other Presidential candidate. He needs to be reminded that a Presidential debate will not require him to work out on a treadmill, or jog the distance, or recite the national pledge, or spell his running mate’s name. President Jonathan was and is ready. With Buhari fleeing the arena with his tails between his legs, there were suggestions that the President could end up debating other candidates from “smaller parties”, but he waved this aside, insisting that every candidate is important. As it then turned out, INEC rescheduled the election dates just the night before and the NEDG group on their own, postponed the debate.

It is worrisome that any Presidential candidate will shy away from a debate out of timidity and fear of inadequacy. And yet a President’s work is one of perpetual debate. He will have to chair meetings, where ideas will be expressed and he must understand what works and may not. He will attend international meetings where he is expected to contribute to discussions, often in the format of a debate.  Without that ability to assimilate, process and discuss ideas, nobody should be trusted with even the management of a local council not to talk of the whole of Nigeria.  A debate also provides a candidate at this level, an opportunity to communicate his vision of leadership, and to explain to the electorate in his own voice, why he deserves their vote.

General Buhari needs to come out of his comfort zone and undertake this test. He has been campaigning on the issues of security yet his supporters preach hate and violence. He talks about the economy yet he couldn’t at a town hall meeting differentiate between the excess crude account and the foreign reserve. He projects himself as an anti-corruption angel yet he is surrounded by a large crowd of morally conflicted persons; to worsen it all, he doesn’t even know the name of his own running mate. When he grants interviews, his responses are cryptic and elliptic, demonstrating such shallowness that confuses an informed audience.

His deliberate avoidance of a Presidential debate is akin to an act of examination malpractice. It is not good enough for a man who wants to be President of our country. He is short-changing the Nigerian electorate by denying them the opportunity of assessing him properly in an open debate.  While a Presidential debate is not a constitutional requirement, it is an established convention that deepens and enriches the democratic process.

President Jonathan is ready to meet him in an open debate, any day, any hour, and at any venue of his choice.   We invite General Buhari to take up the challenge.

Abati is President Jonathan’s official spokesman and media adviser.

Chris Brown mad at his babymama for leaking baby news, to reduce her child support

Chris Brown mad at his babymama for leaking baby news, to reduce her child support

According to a new report, singer Chris Brown is furious with his baby mama for leaking news of his secret 9 months old daughter. And has retaliated by reducing her child support…

From TMZ

Sources connected with Brown tell TMZ ... the singer didn't know he was the father of 9-month-old Royalty until last month, when Nia Guzman dropped the news. We're told Chris quickly made a deal with her where he would pay monthly child support.
Our sources say Chris is forking out substantially more than he'd be required to pay if a judge ordered formal child support. There's a scale on how much a parent pays, based largely on income. We're told Chris upped that amount and in return demanded that she keep her lips sealed.
We know Chris now believes Nia has been leaking stories and talking about their relationship. As a result, our sources say his lawyers are now preparing legal docs, in which he will ask a judge for an order requiring him to pay child support. It sounds strange, but he'll pay less than he does now.

POEMS OF THE DAY

Two Poems
The Lesson
It's as if the god of unhappiness, of low-level discontent at least,
injected his serum into our veins when born, inoculating us
from feeling good for long. He's like a grim schoolmaster
         patrolling the playground, reminding children
they've only a minute or two before the line-up bell,
darkening unconscious happiness, marring natural mirth
with back-burner anxiety, fretful they'll have to line up soon
and march back into interminable lessons, tests,
right and wrong answers, punishment, the classroom's dolor,
learning by rote, the slow tick of the metronome,
the weight of responsibility; that life isn't all play.

To a Teacher
Once more you stand before a cabal of ephebi,
instructing them how to look at the sun.
You pin-hole a sheet of paper.
The light is blacked out, then emerges
out of the night of the moon.
                          Some pupils observe,
lit by learning, others show
not a glimmer of interest. How
can you guide them away
from eclipsing Acedia, Confusion,
Mammon: the dark gods of our day?
You bow your head as if before a shrine
reaching to set a candle alight.
